Tribeca: Meet the Filmmakers

This weekend, we continue our documentary series My First Time, with a look at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival. Three first-time filmmakers share with us their triumphs and struggles as their projects premiere at New York City's famed film festival. My 1st Time: Tribeca Film Festival airs this Saturday, May 2 at 7:30pm on 4 New York.

Julio DePietro left a very lucrative career at an investment firm to pursue his dream as a writer/director. He draws on his experience inside the world of the financial industry in The Good Guy, which he both wrote and directed. The film follows Tommy, a wall street superstar with a budding romance and a mentor-relationship with his firm's newest employee.  But as the story progresses and Tommy's personal life begins to unravel, he finds that even the money and charm of a Wall Street career have their limits. Like in his financial career, the stakes are high as Julio prepares to screen his directorial debut.

The Good Guy stars Scott Porter, Alexis Bledel and Bryan Greenberg. The film plays at the AMC Village II Theater on Friday, May 1 at 2:30pm.

Documentary filmmaker Nicole Opper hopes that young people will relate to her directorial debut -- a documentary that illustrates the struggles of defining one's identity. Few are better suited to explore the questions of identity than Avery Klein-Cloud, the subject and co-screenwriter of Opper's Off and Running. The African-American adopted daughter of a Jewish lesbian couple, Avery jokes that her family is like the United Nations. One of her brothers is Korean, the other is of mixed race. Avery, a high school track athlete with her eyes on a college scholarship, encounters unexpected dilemmas as she reaches out to her biological mother. Avery's story is universal, but unique, as she explores her own identity and questions what family really means.

Off and Running plays at the AMC Village II Theater on Saturday, May 2 at 3pm.

Tony Award-winnning actor Dan Fogler (Balls of Fury, Good Luck Chuck) goes from in front of the lens to behind it in Hysterical Psycho. The film stars Dan's close friends -- members of his independent theatre group Stage 13. Tribeca affords Dan the opportunity to prove himself as a director, and his colleagues the chance to showcase their acting talent. Set in the fictional horror hotbed of Moon Lake, the film (taglined: "It's all fun and games until someone loses their mind") puts a theater group in the secluded woods, where one by one they are picked off by some sort of evil. The question? Is it the work of Moon Lake's mysterious inhabitants or is the killer one of their own?

Hysterical Psycho plays at the AMC Village II Theater on Friday, May 1 at 11:59pm and Saturday, May 2 at 11:45pm. Visit the film's official site.
